This is a fossil of one of the oldest land plants. It is called Cooksonia and its size is about 3 cm. Its age is 410 million years. Plants were still very simple at the time: no leaves and no flowers. Nothing but bifurcating branches with a sporangium on top.

How plants conquered the land

Here is a reconstruction of this plant in the museum of Ludlow (England). From this group of plants countless new forms developed. In the course of many millions of years new adaptations came into existence like leaves, wood, trees, seeds and flowers. The rich flora, like we know it nowadays, has evolved in the immense period of more than 400 million of years. Evolution takes a lot of time!
