Beautifully weathered layers in an old quarry on the mountain of Kinnekulle
in Sweden. The lowermost layers are the oldest ones because they are deposited
first. For the fossils in the layers applies: the higher they sit, the younger they are. But they are not really young, for the rock has an age of more than 450 millions of years (Ordovician). From layers like these it appears that species have undergone an evolution.

At several places scientists have done painstaking research on the fossil
content of the succeeding layers to investigate the evolution of certain
organisms, like ammonites in this case. This has produced lines of descent
(lineages). These lineages indicate how species have evolved from other species.
