Westminster Abbey

Darwin's funeral
From: Darwin, Desmond & Moore 1991

On April 26, 1882 Darwin was buried in Westminster Abbey in Londen. There had indeed been some resistance from the clerical side, for Darwin had caused difficult times for the church. And he was clearly a non-believer. But the social pressure was so strong that he got his place amidst other celebrities. Here an impression of the ceremony.
We have tried to find his tombstone but at first we couldn't find it. We then queued up to buy a ticket for the paid part of the church. Looking downwards my wife saw the word Charles engraved in the floor. She said: Step a bit aside. We were standing on his gravestone.
