In December 1881 Darwin suffered a heart attack while he was visiting a friend in London. But he recovered.
On April 19, 1882, he died at Down at the age of 73, vomiting, amidst his beloved family members.
Emma and the children intended to bury him at the churchyard in the village but the parlement, the scientists and the press wished him to be buried among other great Britons, in Westminster Abbey in London. The family agreed.
On top a statue of Darwin, sitting in his Old Study, at an exposition on evolution in the Natural History Museum in London.
The surviving children of Darwin's did well. Elisabeth (Bessie) stayed at home, the others were married and most of them were socially successful. Click on the family tree for an enlarged image.
