Darwin moved into a real house in the Upper Gowerstreet in Londen, awaiting
his wedding, which was performed on January 29, 1839 in Maer, the residence
town of Emma. Their marriage has been very happy, and without Emma Darwin
had certainly not been able to achieve what he did. They got ten children, of whom two died very young.

Darwin had been sickly from his 28th year on and Emma took care of him
as a loving nurse. He was in fact in periods invalid. Then even talking with
friends was too much. Yet he kept working hard. He collected innummerable facts and he talked and corresponded with breeders and growers (sometimes 20 letters a day!). He sent lists with questions to scientists and other people and he read very much. And he made notes of everything of any importance. |
