This is a list of the books written by Darwin up to 1862. After his coral reef book in 1842 a book on vulcanic islands followed soon (1844). After that another geological book came out in 1846, the book 'Geological Observations on South America'. Then he interrupted his work on the evolution theory by concentrating himself on barnacles and goose barnacles (Cirripedia). He had the feeling that he was still not a qualified biologist. And he didn't want to come out with his (radical) theory before he had qualified himself. Between 1851 and 1854 his monograph on the Cirripedia was published. Next in 1859 his most famous book On the Origin of Species appeared. From that moment his writing was mainly about botanical subjects. These will be discussed later. Now something more about his personal life. He did really enjoy the many contacts he had in London, but he noticed also that he disliked the large city: stench, dirt, feeling to be locked up. He had too much work to do and became a bit depressed. Moreover, his health was declining: since his return he suffered of sickness, vomiting, etc. The cause of it is unclear.
He considered marrying. A list has been found in his papers with the advantages and disadvantages of marriage and this list is very amusing. Click on the picture above to get a readable version of it.
Conclusion is: marry! He decided to look for a wife and his choice was his niece Emma Wedgwood, the daughter of Uncle Jos.
