Downhouse

Old study

In September 1842 they moved into the country house Down House in the quiet village Down. Down (which is now called Downe) is situated about 20 km south of the city centre of London. In this house Darwin has spent the rest of his life and he has written all his books there.
In the course of time the Darwins have extended the house to have sufficient room for their increasing family.

Down House

This is the 'Old Study' where Darwin did most of his work. In this room he noted down in 1842 his theory in the 'Pencil Sketch'. Later on this essay has played an important role.
Down House is now a museum and it is certainly worth visiting it. Everything is as far as possible in the original state.
