In September 1842 they moved into the country house Down House in the
quiet village Down. Down (which is now called Downe) is situated about 20
km south of the city centre of London. In this house Darwin has spent the
rest of his life and he has written all his books there. In the course of time the Darwins have extended the house to have sufficient room for their increasing family.

This is the 'Old Study' where Darwin did most of his work. In this room
he noted down in 1842 his theory in the 'Pencil Sketch'. Later on this essay
has played an important role. Down House is now a museum and it is certainly worth visiting it. Everything is as far as possible in the original state. |
