Rabbits

The last Quagga

Darwin visited each exposition of rabbits, poultry, pigeons, etc which he could find and he posed all kind of questions, often also by mail. In this way he learned that some horses, especially younger ones, show stripes. This is an indication for relationship with zebra's for example or with this extinct Quagga from South Africa, which possessed stripes only on the front part of its body. The Quagga on the photo is the stuffed specimen in the Museum Naturalis in Leiden (NL) which died in 1883 in Amsterdam as the last member of its species.
