| Very tragic was the death of Darwin's beloved oldest daughter Annie in 1851. He was so affected that he could not attend her funeral. Owing to this event he lost his last bit of faith. His own health in this period was also very bad and he really feared to die himself. He did water cures in Malvern, where also Annie had been treated. Emma was pregnant with their ninth child.
