Cartoon Darwin and Owen

Darwin in Oxford

Though Darwin had never said that man was descended from an ape, criticism and ridicule were directed mainly to this point. It was obvious for people that Darwin scrupulously avoided to mention man. So everywhere ape jokes appeared, like the one above. Darwin: You know we all sprang from monkeys? Owen: What a pity YOU didn't spring a little further. Owen has always remained a strong opponent of Darwin, despite the fact that he had described his fossils. Lyell, however, was convinced by Darwin's work. He has even added a third volume to his standard work, in which he discussed the evolution theory.
In the University Museum in Oxford Darwin has got a fine place, near the lobe-finned fish Latimeria (the Coelacanth), a living fossil.
