Taxodon

In the Natural History Museum in Londen stands a complete skeleton of the extinct giant armadillo Glyptodon. The animal had the size of a Volkswagen beetle and his weight was about a ton. The relatives living nowadays in South America are considerably smaller. The species became extinct only about 15, 000 years ago.
Darwin found a nearly complete skeleton of this animal.

In the foreground three specimens of Taxodon, a giant extinct relative of Capybara. These are the biggest rodents that ever existed. In the background is the Macrauchenia, which Darwin thought to be a llama but which was in fact a tapir. Darwin has collected bones of these animals.
