The spore-cones of Sigillaria and
Lepidodendron are often difficult to distinguish. The following
characteristics can be helpful for this purpose: - The leaflets (sporophyls) of Sigillariostrobus were more easely shed. As a consequence often (partly) bare axes are found. - The leaflets are often broad at the base, short and acute. - The scars at the axes are arranged in a low upward spiral. Use the cursor as a magnifying glass in the photo below left and look at the lower part to see the spiral. The enlargement can be changed by turning the mouse wheel. - The leaflets of the cone are arranged in rows (just like the leaves on the trunk). This is sometimes visible in the fossil, e.g. in the photos 2 and 3. |
