In siderite concretions from the (now closed) opencast mine Crockhey
between Manchester and Liverpool beautifully preserved plant fossils as well
as animal fossils have been found. In the quarry coal has been mined, dating
from the Upper Carboniferous (Westphalian A). Siderite is an iron compound
which is sometimes used as ore.
Below are three fine specimens of the extinct horseshoe crab Be(l)linurus
trilobitoides. Click on the photos for enlargement.
