Vascular bundles in palm wood
Microphoto of the region in the neighbourhood of the bark (on the left).
Note that the vascular bundles are oriented in the direction of the bark:
the sclerenchymatic cap is pointing to the bark, the vascular part with the 'eyes'  is looking to the right.
Generally this orientation disappears as the vascular bundles are situated further from the outside.
The sclerenchyma bundles are visible as dark spots.
