Longitudinal section through stem AMicrophoto (100 x) of a vessel in stem A.
The vessel elements, of which the vessel consists, are clearly visible. In the separation walls is the perforation plate.
On the left: fibres.

When two or more vessels are touching each other, they are connected through intervessel pits. These are rather complicated systems with a membrane. These pits are visible in the uppermost two vessel elements and in the inset.
